Fortis Hospital, Anandapur in association with Calcutta Rescue an NGO, is conducting immunization program and health talks on the importance of maintaining basic health and hygiene at slums in Kolkata and Salt Lake.
Immunization is one of the most cost-effective interventions to prevent the suffering that comes from avoidable sickness, disability and death. The benefits of immunization are not restricted to improvements in health and life expectancy but also have social and economic impact at both community and national levels.
Immunization protects children from serious illness and complications of vaccine-preventable diseases which can include amputation of an arm or leg, paralysis of limbs, hearing loss, convulsions, brain damage, and death. Vaccine-preventable diseases, such as measles, mumps, and whooping cough, are still a threat.
As per WHO report immunization averts 2 to 3 million deaths annually, and an additional 1.5 million deaths could be avoided if global vaccination coverage improves. Today, an estimated 18.7 million infants – nearly 1 in 5 children – worldwide are still missing routine immunizations for preventable diseases, such as diphtheria, pertussis and tetanus.
“We are happy to run out the immunization program and also glad to reach out to the extremely needy people in association with the Calcutta Rescue, who are working for the underprivileged children for a decade. We all dream of a healthy society and we have stepped forward towards it. We are happy to announce that we are adding to our list by including more children and taking care of them accordingly,” said Mr. Samir Singh, Zonal Director, Fortis Hospital Anandapur.
“It was a challenge for all of us to make the children and their family aware about immunization, basic health and maintenance of hygiene. When we started our work at Garden Reach Area people used to shun us. But after two months there was a certain change in the scenario. We are now monitoring 450 children regularly through this immunization project and we are vaccinating them. I am really grateful for being a part of this project actively,” said Dr. Alakananda Ghosh, Deputy CEO – Medical, Calcutta Rescue.
About Calcutta Rescue
Calcutta Rescue is a registered non – governmental organization (NGO) operating in Kolkata and some parts of rural West Bengal for over three decades serving the most socially and economically disadvantaged people of the region – regardless of gender, age, caste or religion.
Although India is a rising power today, the harsh reality of poverty and deprivation cannot be ignored. In Kolkata and areas of rural West Bengal itself, almost 4 million people live below the poverty line and some 2.5 million people live on the streets and slums scattered across the city. Thus, Calcutta Rescue was established to meet the most basic needs of these poor and downtrodden, providing free medical care, education, benefits and vocational training for increasing income generation opportunities.
