The quake affected Siliguri, Jalpaiguri, Kochbihar and other districts of North Bengal at 8:49 pm. The quake affected Bihar, Assam, Sikkim as well as Nepal and Bhutan, Nagaland, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh.

According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), the magnitude of the tremor was 6.1 on the Richter scale. The epicenter was reported at 10 km below the ground, 25 km from Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim. Although the tremor was higher in North Bengal, the tremor in Sikkim was 5.4 on the Richter scale. The epicenter was reported at 51 km from Lachung. This vibration lasts for several seconds.

On this day, after the earthquake was felt, Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar called the Chief Minister. “Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee is in Siliguri at the moment. I called her to inquire about her condition after the 6.1 magnitude earthquake in North Bengal. I am relieved to know that she is healthy and well,” the governor tweeted.

The governor added in a tweet that the epicenter was 10 km below the ground, 25 km from Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim. “
