#Barasat: Two special observers of the Election Commission have advised the central forces to be more restrained in the upcoming elections. Ajay Naik and Vivek Dubey, two special observers appointed by the commission, sat in a high-level meeting with the chiefs of the central forces in Barasat on Monday. There, two observers instructed the CRPF to be more careful in the next round of voting. Sources raised the issue of Shitalkuchi in the news meeting and suggested to take a final decision keeping in view the situation in the upcoming election process in coordination with the district administration. He said that if the situation gets out of hand, even if there is a situation of firing, in that case the standard operating procedure (SOP) has to be followed.
Sources said that the issue of Shitalkuchi came up again and again in today’s meeting. Observers say the forces could fire in self-defense if the situation in Kochbihar re-emerges. But even in that case, as a rule, one has to try to disperse the crowd by firing in the air first. If the situation is not under control, the shot should be fired below the knee.
Sources said that the two special observers warned the central forces on the day out of anger. “You have come here to help the local administration. Do not indulge yourself in any unrest and tension. Be careful, exercise restraint and do your duty,” they said.
Incidentally, four people were killed in the firing of the central forces at Shitalkuchi in Kochbihar. In support of the incident, the forces said that they were forced to open fire in self-defense as the agitated mob surrounded them and tried to snatch their weapons.
