New Delhi: A sudden tornado that struck the Mayurbhanj district of Odisha on Sunday, 15 March 2026, in the afternoon, caused widespread devastation, throwing normal life into chaos. One person met a tragic end after being caught in the path of high-speed winds and a dust storm, while dozens of others sustained injuries.

The tornado caused extensive damage across several villages, leaving more than 70 homes either completely destroyed or partially damaged.

Weather took a sudden turn

According to eyewitnesses, the weather took a sudden turn in the afternoon, and within just a few minutes, accompanied by thunder, the tornado unleashed its full fury.

The roofs of kutcha (mud) houses were blown away, while the walls of several pakka (concrete) houses developed cracks, and a large number of trees were uprooted, crashing onto the roads.

Consequently, traffic remained disrupted for hours. The collapse of electric poles plunged several areas into darkness and also disrupted the drinking water supply.

District administration acts swiftly

Upon receiving news of the incident, teams from the district administration, police, and the fire department rushed to the scene and immediately commenced relief and rescue operations. The injured were promptly admitted to nearby Community Health Centers and the District Hospital.

Some of the critically injured have been referred to higher medical institutions for advanced treatment. The administration has assured the family of the deceased that financial assistance will be provided in accordance with established norms.

Many villagers caught unawares

Just a day prior, the Meteorological Department had issued a warning, forecasting the possibility of thunderstorms, strong winds, and localized tornadoes in certain districts of northern Odisha.

The department had advised people to stay away from open spaces, avoid taking shelter in fragile structures, and take precautions against lightning strikes. However, due to the unexpected intensity of the sudden tornado, many villagers were caught unawares and fell victim to its fury.
