A suspicious bag was discovered near RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. Authorities promptly called in a bomb disposal squad, leading to the area being cordoned off by security forces. Simultaneously, junior doctors maintained their sit-in outside the West Bengal Health Department’s office, continuing their ‘cease work’ protest following the alleged rape and murder of a young medic at the capital’s hospital.

The junior doctors have been vocal about their demands for justice, including enhanced security measures for female health professionals. They are also calling for the suspension of several officials, including the Kolkata Police Commissioner and the state health secretary, accusing them of mishandling the case.
In a bid to end the deadlock, Chief Secretary Manoj Pant extended an invitation to the protesting doctors for talks. Pant’s letter, addressing the inconvenience faced by patients and their families due to the ongoing protests, emphasized the need for a dialogue. The invitation proposed a meeting at the state secretariat, Nabanna, with a suggested delegation size of 12-15 doctors.
However, tensions escalated as the doctors insisted on a larger delegation of at least 30 members and transparency through a live broadcast of the meeting. They also called for the presence of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to address their five key demands.
Despite the Chief Secretary’s plea for a smaller delegation, the doctors stood firm on their conditions, indicating that the road to resolution may be more complex than anticipated.
