What Is Infant Botulism?
Infant botulism is a serious but rare illness caused by bacteria known as Clostridium botulinum. When babies accidentally consume food contaminated with its spores, the bacteria can grow in their intestines and release toxins that affect the nervous system. As per Dr Prashanth Gowda, paediatrician and neonatologist at Motherhood Hospital, “Symptoms usually start with constipation and can lead to problems with feeding, a weak or changed cry, and loss of muscle tone.” Other signs are poor feeding habits, loss of head control, and difficulty swallowing. If not treated immediately, the condition can lead to paralysis and breathing difficulties.Signs and Prevention
