Putting Power into Action: DPS Megacity Marks Earth Day with Industrial-Scale Plastic Handover

In a massive win for urban sustainability, the students of DPS Megacity Kolkata turned environmental awareness into action today, celebrating Earth Day 2026 by reclaiming their role as protectors of the environment. At DPS Megacity Kolkata students have been practising environmental sustainability for a long time. Generating awareness about the various methods of conservation has been a part of the regular activity in the classrooms, and in a remarkable outcome of these sustained efforts, approximately 300 kgs of plastic waste was collected during the initiative.

This celebration brings to life the Earth Day 2026 global theme, “Our Power, Our Planet.” By mobilising the student body to reclaim plastic waste, DPS Megacity is demonstrating that the “power” to protect the planet isn’t just a concept, it is a tangible force held by the next generation. The initiative proved that when young people reclaim their agency, they become the primary drivers of systemic environmental change.

Moving beyond classroom theory, the student-led “Plastic Bank” campaign saw the campus transform into a high-efficiency collection hub for three days. By treating every bottle as “environmental currency,” the initiative successfully diverted a significant volume of plastic from local landfills, channelling it directly back into the circular economy. This formal handover marks a shift in how educational institutions tackle the plastic crisis, transforming students into active supply-chain contributors for a greener India. A sustainable solutions institution had joined hands with the students of DPS Megacity, Kolkata to give shape to this Plastic Bank concept and recycle the plastic waste collected from the school campus.

Speaking on the success of the collaboration, Mrs. Tilottama Mallik, Principal of DPS Megacity, Kolkata, stated, “We are no longer just teaching students about the environment, we are giving them the tools to manage it. The school’s environment club consisting of students of class 6-12, have been actively participating in various eco friendly projects and won laurels. These initiatives show that our students in their individual efforts have a direct, industrial-scale impact on the planet. By quantifying the impact of every bottle collected, our students are demonstrating the massive economic and ecological power of responsible waste management.”

Reinforcing the school’s commitment to sustainable operations, Mr. Harshit Chokhani, Group Chief Operating Officer, DPS Megacity, Kolkata, added, “At DPS Megacity, we believe that sustainability must be woven into the fabric of our institutional operations. The activities in DPS Megacity is a testament to how academic and enrichment activities together can create a scalable model for a zero-waste future. It is heartening to see our students lead this change with such precision and passion.”

This collaboration underscores the power of academic-industrial synergy in achieving zero-waste goals for Earth Day 2026, setting a new benchmark for institutional sustainability in West Bengal by ensuring thousands of bottles find new life rather than polluting our ecosystems.
