Comedian Samay Raina has found himself at the centre of a legal setback after the Supreme Court questioned his conduct during proceedings linked to India’s Got Latent controversy. The court expressed strong displeasure over his actions and observed that he had failed to follow assurances given earlier. The matter, which has been under judicial review for months, relates to remarks made during episodes of the show that sparked criticism over comments involving people with disabilities.
Why did the Supreme Court impose a Rs 10 lakh fine on Samay Raina?
The Supreme Court on Monday, July 13, imposed a Rs 10 lakh fine on Samay Raina after observing that he had made false statements before the court and had not followed earlier directions. The bench, comprising Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice JV Mohana, said that the comedian had “taken the court for a ride”.
The court directed Raina to deposit the amount within two weeks and warned that coercive action would be taken if he failed to comply with the order. The observation came while hearing petitions filed by content creators Ranveer Allahbadia and Ashish Chanchlani along with the Cure SMA Foundation.
What did the Supreme Court say about Samay Raina’s actions?
During the hearing, the court noted that Raina had given certain assurances earlier but did not act according to those commitments. The judges observed that his conduct after making statements before the bench did not match the promises placed on record. The proceedings focused on whether Raina had taken steps towards addressing concerns raised by the disability rights community after the controversy surrounding India’s Got Latent.
Senior Advocate Aparajita Singh, representing the Cure SMA Foundation, informed the court that Raina had not contacted the organisation or individuals affected by Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), despite assurances that such steps would be taken. “Samay Raina is doing shows, but has not contacted the SMA Foundation or persons suffering from SMA as per the court’s order. I don’t know what kind of youth icon he is. I shudder to think,” Singh told the court.
