In a profound tribute to the nation’s heritage and the enduring spirit of freedom, Meghalaya hosted a majestic ‘At Home’ reception today at Lok Bhawan, Shillong, to mark India’s 80th Independence Day.
Graciously hosted by his excellency Shri C.HVijayashankar, Hon’ble Governor of Meghalaya and joined by Shri Conrad KSangma, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Meghalaya, DrShakil PAhammed, IAS, Chief Secretary, Government of Meghalaya, Shri H.CChaudhary, IFS, Additional Chief Secretary to the Governor of Meghalaya, Members of the Indian Armed Forces and other senior government officials, the event celebrated the nation’s heritage through art, music, dance, and foodThe dual themes of the occasion honoured the national song ‘Vande Mataram’ alongside the vision of ‘Yuva Shakti for Viksit Bharat 2047’, uniting the State with the rest of the country in these nationwide celebrations.
The proceedings began with the Hon’ble Governor inaugurating and inspecting a display of local stallsFollowing a fanfare by the Border Security Force, the Hon’ble Governor arrived at the saluting dias to take the National Salute as the Meghalaya Police Band played the National AnthemThe cultural program, titled “The Colors of India,” featured artist troupes traveling from across the country to share their artistry alongside Meghalaya’s own repertoireThe performances commenced with artists from the Department of Art and Culture, Government of Meghalaya, leading the gathering in a rendition of the 150-year-old national song, ‘Vande Mataram’.
Audiences experienced a diverse cultural presentation featuring the Jagarna dance, a popular dance among the nomadic tribes of the Jammu region, and the Rouf dance, recognized as the most famous folk dance of Kashmir that celebrates its colourful cultural repositoryThe program also included the Bhawai Dance and Kesariya Balam song from Rajasthan, along with classical Bharatnatyam from KarnatakaThe Gitanjalee Dance Academy presented a conceptual piece depicting Bengal as a cultural melting potMeghalaya’s indigenous heritage was proudly represented through the Ka Shad Mastieh warrior dance of the Khasi Tribe, the Chad Kheit Soh folk dance of the Jaintia Tribes, and the Wangala harvest traditional folk dance of the Garo TribesThe Assam Rifles Jazz Band provided ongoing musical support, playing light instrumental and patriotic compositions throughout the gathering.
The celebration created a meaningful cultural confluence, gathering the varied traditions of India on a single platform in ShillongBy placing the folk expressions of Jammu, Kashmir, Rajasthan, and Karnataka alongside the deep-rooted heritage of the Khasi, Jaintia, and Garo communities, the event celebrated an appreciation for the country’s diverse customsThis shared space highlighted a strong national identity built on mutual respect for regional arts, reflecting the true essence of Independence Day through unity and cultural connection.
The gathering also served as an occasion to honour local talent and grassroots achievers. The Hon’ble Governor felicitated Shri Lynti Rynghang of Ri Bhoi District for excellence in woodcraft, SmtNorma RLakiang of East Khasi Hills District for Bonsai cultivation, and Shri Dirot Chambugong Marak of West Garo Hills District for his work with traditional musical instrumentsAdditionally, the Department of Horticulture, Government of Meghalaya recognized the winners of the King of the Flower show was awarded to Shri Kyntonsing Kharkongor and Queen of the Flower Show was bagged by SmtSumarlin Lyngdoh.
Spearheaded by a collaborative effort among PRIME (Promotion and Incubation of Market-driven Enterprises) Meghalaya, The Meghalaya State Agriculture Marketing Board (MSAMB) Department of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, The Meghalaya Natural and Organic Farming Society for Livelihood and Innovation in Agriculture (MEGNOLIA), the Department of Arts and Culture, and allied State departments, the event highlighted Meghalaya’s push toward sustainable livelihoods, cultural preservation, and organic farming.
Visitors can explore the State’s agricultural and artisanal wealth through dedicated exhibits like Meghalaya Collectives, the Mushroom Development Centre, and vibrant floral displays from the Florish Meghalaya Orchid Garden and Chrysanthemum Farms etcBy showcasing local craftsmanship and heritage from groups such as Indigenous Innovations of Meghalaya and the Women’s Group & Handicrafts Multi-Purpose Co-operative Society, the initiative created a platform to celebrate the State’s rich traditions and economic opportunities.
The Lok Bhavan in Shillong will open to the public on August 15 (1:30 PM – 8:00 PM) and August 16 (11:00 AM – 8:00 PM).
