Kerala Police lane traffic safety guidelines: In a swift move to curb rising road accidents, the Kerala Police issued strict lane traffic safety guidelines on Monday after identifying poor lane discipline as a primary cause of major highway crashesThe Traffic and Road Safety Management wing highlighted a hazardous trend of two-wheeler riders, including women, cruising close to the right shoulder and median, often driven by the dangerous misconception that riding near the divider offers better protection.

Authorities emphasized that improper lane management on national highways severely increases crash risks for all commutersBy enforcing these updated safety protocols, the state police headquarters aims to correct risky riding habits, clear median-adjacent lanes for faster transit, and significantly reduce preventable traffic fatalities across the state.
“Ignorance about traffic rules is often the reason for such violations and the accidents resulting from them,” the police said.

The extreme right lane should generally be used only for overtaking, after which vehicles should return to their previous lane, it said.
The police also asked motorists to use indicators before changing lanes and check rear-view and side mirrors for vehicles approaching from behind and from the sides.
“Change lanes only while maintaining a proper distance and without causing difficulty to other vehicles,” the police said.
It said lane changes could be made at places with broken white lines if it was safe, but were not permitted where there were unbroken white linesMotorists were also advised to avoid overtaking at places marked with yellow lines and changing lanes at junctions and zebra crossings.
The police asked road users to strictly follow traffic signs displayed along roads.
