Chand Mera Dil struggled to build strong momentum at cinemas on day one with the romantic drama recording underwhelming numbers despite its young star cast and musical appeal.
Chand Mera Dil finally arrived in theatres on May 22 after facing multiple delays and months of anticipation among young moviegoers. Backed by Dharma Productions the romantic drama generated attention because of its fresh pairing and emotional storyline. However, the film did not manage to pull large crowds to cinemas on its opening day. While audiences were curious about the chemistry between Ananya Panday and Lakshya the mixed response from critics and viewers appears to have affected the film’s initial box office performance.
Chand Mera Dil gets a slow start at the box office
According to early trade estimates by Sacnilk, Chand Mera Dil collected around Rs 2.90 crore net in India on its first day. The romantic drama released across nearly 4944 shows nationwide but still struggled to register strong occupancy throughout the day.
Even though the opening figures were lower than expected for a Karan Johar-backed film, the movie still performed better than Ek Din, starring Junaid Khan and Sai Pallavi. That romantic film had opened with around Rs 1.15 crore net on day one and has earned nearly Rs 4 crore in India so far.
Occupancy remained low throughout the day
The overall Hindi occupancy for the film on day one stood at around 17.31 percent which reflected the slow response from audiences. Morning shows recorded only 6.62 percent occupancy while afternoon shows improved slightly to 19.38 percent. The evening shows saw around 15.54 percent occupancy while night shows performed comparatively better with 23.31 percent. Despite some growth during late-night screenings the numbers still remained below expectations for a romantic drama featuring popular young stars.
Mixed reviews impact audience turnout
One of the major reasons behind the weak opening appears to be the mixed-to-negative response from critics and viewers. Many audience members praised the performances of the lead actors but felt the emotional writing and screenplay lacked consistency.
Trade experts now believe the film’s future depends heavily on weekend growth and word of mouth. Romantic dramas often witness improvement if audiences emotionally connect with the story during the first few days. If positive reactions increase over the weekend the film could still recover at the box office.
Storyline and cast details
Directed by Vivek Soni the film revolves around Chandni played by Ananya Panday and Aarav played by Lakshya. The two meet during college in Hyderabad and eventually fall in love. Their lives change after an unplanned pregnancy leads them toward marriage. As responsibilities and pressure begin to grow their relationship slowly starts falling apart. One emotional argument eventually turns violent which becomes the major turning point of the film and shapes the rest of the story.
Weekend performance becomes crucial
The coming days are expected to play an important role in deciding the box office fate of Chand Mera Dil. While the film opened below expectations the makers will be hoping for stronger occupancy during Saturday and Sunday as family audiences and young viewers step into cinemas.
