Actress Kriti Sanon has found herself at the centre of an online debate after featuring in a Raksha Bandhan jewellery advertisementThe actor appears in a fusion outfit with a bralette-style blouse, cape and draped skirt in the campaign, which has divided social media users. While some viewers criticised Kriti Sanon’s outfit, and questioned whether it was appropriate for a festive advertisement, others defended Kriti and argued that women should not be judged based on their clothing.

The GIVA advertisement has also drawn attention for featuring a dogIn the video, Kriti ties a rakhi to the pet after he barks at herWhile some users questioned the concept, others focused mainly on her outfit.

Why is Kriti Sanon being criticised?

The outfit worn by Kriti became one of the biggest talking points after the advertisement was shared onlineSome social media users felt that the bralette-style blouse was too revealing for a campaign centred around Raksha BandhanOthers argued that the criticism was unnecessary and amounted to policing a woman’s choice of clothing.

One user wrote, “Bikinis are for beaches and resorts, think there are better clothes for festivals, sad if they think they can get away by titillating religious festivals of one community while being totally pious towards others…”

Another user criticised Kriti’s outfit and wrote, “Those who dress skimpily can have only one objectTo be the subject of the male gazeYet women like Kriti Sanon will loudly object “to being objectified” when that is clearly their aim & qualificationWhat they do with their bodies may be deemed to be their business & of their families (if they have a family) but when repeated and pointed selective attempts are made to denigrate, belittle or portray “anything goes” where Hindu traditions/festivals are concerned, the pattern is clear and must be condemned.”

Another social media user questioned the campaign’s concept and wrote, “What nonsense is this? Inko Hindu festivals hi milte hain apna WOKE agenda chalane? Here, Kriti Sanon is “celebrating” #RakshaBandhan wearing this skimpy outfit (perhaps left over from Cocktail 2)Kriti is not just a brand ambassador, but also a strategic investor, so she would have a say in the concept & clothesI challenge GIVA to make an E!D ad with such a skimpily dressed modelThey won’t.”

A fourth user criticised the jewellery brand and wrote, “This Raksha Bandhan, @giva sells Big lossBest of luck selling your products, but please don’t hurt Hindu sentiments by making such a reelThis is not how Hindus celebrate Raksha BandhanPlease show the real traditions and rituals instead of portraying it this way.”

The advertisement has since sparked a wider debate online, with social media users divided over the styling, creative concept and representation of the festival.
