India vs Sri Lanka 2026 2nd Test: Team India and Rajasthan Royals opener Yashasvi Jaiswal might be in some big trouble after his antics on Day 1 of the 2nd Test against Sri Lanka at the Sinhalese Sports Club (SSC) ground in Colombo on SundayJaiswal was bowled by Sri Lanka pacer Asitha Fernando for 45 off 53 balls with 9 fours on the opening day.
The incident occurred in the 17th over of Day 1 after pacer Fernando, having conceded three boundaries to Jaiswal, struck back to dismiss the RR opener on the final balls of his overThe two players then exchanged words and came face-to-face, with what appeared to be clashing of their heads, before Sri Lankan captain Dhananjaya de Silva stepped in to calm the situation down.

Any sort of physical assault with the intention to cause bodily harm or injury as well as acts of violence like kicking, punching or fighting during an international match are considered Level 4 offences under ICC Rules and Regulations.
Article 2.18 of the ICC Code of Conduct includes, “Physical assault of another Player, Player Support Personnel, Umpire, Match Referee or any other person during an International Match.”
Article 2.19 adds, “Any act of violence on the field of play during an International Match.” A Level 4 offence carries the most severe punishment under the ICC rules“Penalties for Level 4 Offences will range from a ban of between 5 Test Matches or 10 ODI matches, up to a life ban for the player or official concerned,” the ICC Rules and Regulations dictate.

Yashasvi Jaiswal shouldn’t have gone that close: Sitanshu Kotak
Team India batting coach Sitanshu Kotak came out to address the media after the end of day’s play in Colombo on SundayKotak admitted that Jaiswal shouldn’t have gone ‘that close’ to Sri Lanka pacer Asitha Fernando.
“I think the bowler must have made some comment, and it was probably said in the heat of the momentObviously, I don’t think Jaiswal should have gone that close, but these things happen in the heat of the moment,” Kotak said at the post-match press conference.
Sri Lanka’s fast bowling coach Ryan van Niekerk said it’s the duty of match referee, in this case Andy Pycroft, to look into such things“The verbals are probably an overflow of emotionI’ll leave that to the match referee to deal with,” Van Niekerk said.
Jaiswal was retained for Rs 18 crore by Rajasthan Royals and is opening partner Vaibhav Sooryavanshi in IPL.
India finished Day 1 of the second Test against Sri Lanka at 300 for 5, with Devdutt Padikkal’s brilliant second Test century – 117 – and Shubman Gill’s composed fifty helping the visitors recover from 66 for 2Padikkal and Gill added 120 runs for the third wicket before Gill was dismissed by Asitha Fernando.
Rishabh Pant retired hurt after being struck on the wrist but returned to bat on Day 2 after the dismissal of debutant Saransh Jain for 6, while Ravindra Jadeja contributed 43 before being bowled by Fernando.
Earlier, Jaiswal scored 45 and KL Rahul made 18 as Sri Lanka’s pacers struck twice in the opening sessionIndia, who won the toss and opted to bat.
