IND vs SL 2026 2nd Test: The second Test between India and Sri Lanka at the Sinhalese Sports Club (SSC) ground is not even a couple of days old and Shubman Gill’s side have already been dealt a big blow by the International Cricket Council (ICC)In the middle of second day’s play at the SSC in Colombo, the ICC announced that India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sri Lanka pacer Asitha Fernando have both been sanctioned.
In the first session of the opening day on Sunday, Jaiswal and Fernando were involved in an ill-tempered clash, videos of which went viral on social mediaThe incident occurred in the 17th over of Day 1 after pacer Fernando, having conceded three boundaries to Jaiswal, struck back to dismiss the RR opener on the final ball of his overThe two players were then seen exchanging words and came face-to-face, with what appeared to be clashing of their heads, before Sri Lankan captain Dhananjaya de Silva stepped in to calm the situation down.

Jaiswal had walked towards Fernando and the two exchanged words, following which Fernando moved his head towards JaiswalIn response, Jaiswal leant in, resulting in their heads making contact.
“Both players admitted the offences and accepted the sanctions proposed by Andy Pycroft of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees, so there was no need for formal hearings,” ICC said in a statement on Monday.
“Both players were found to have breached Article 2.12 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to ‘inappropriate physical contact with a Player, Player Support Personnel, Umpire, Match Referee or any other person (including a spectator during an International Match)’.
“In addition to this, one demerit point each has been added to the disciplinary records of Fernando and Jaiswal, both of whom did not have any previous offences in the preceding 24-month period,” the statement added.
Before start of play on day two, Jaiswal had defended his actions saying, “If you don’t know what he said then please don’t make your judgment if anyone cross the line we need to let them know this India will fight and reply.”
The statement was made in a reply to video posted by Cricbuzz website with commentator Harsha Bhogle discussing the issue“All I want to say to Jaiswal is… yes, maybe what was said should not have been saidBut as you give, so you must takeThe easiest thing is just to walk away,” Bhogle said in the video.
On-field umpires Ahsan Raza and Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid, third umpire Rod Tucker and fourth umpire Prageeth Rambukwella levelled the charge against Jaiswal and Fernando.
Level 1 breaches carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand, a maximum penalty of 50 per cent of a player’s match fee, and one or two demerit points.
