Pakistan suffered one of their most embarrassing defeats in the longest format after England registered a a massive victory by an innings and 103 runs to gain a 1-0 lead in the three-match Test series yesterdayThe visitors were without full-time captain Babar Azam, who had sustained a right hand injury, days before the start of the opener in Headingley.
In Babar’s absence, the team was led by Salman Ali Agha but that made no difference at allPakistan looked absolutely clueless throughout the three innings that were playedAs a matter of fact, the match had begun on the worst way possible for the Pakistanis as young opener Azan Awais departed for a golden duck on the very first ball on day one after England won the toss and elected to bat first.
Ollie Robinson breathed fire not only in the first innings but throughout the three-day affairAfter scalping Awais with a sensational inswinger, the right-arm pacer struck again in the fifth over, getting rid of former Pakistan Test captain Shan Masood for just five runs.
The onus then fell on Imam-ul-Haq and Abdullah Shafique after a brief rain delayThe duo were given the task to build the Pakistani innings but all they could manage was a 91-run partnership before Imam became Josh Tongue’s first wicket of the day for 42 off 74.
Shafique then had another small 20-run partnership with Saud Shakeel, who managed only five off 25 before Ollie Robinson registered his third scalp of the day with another lbwResistance was desperately required from the middle-order but it was Abdullah Shafique, who was the only stand out peformer for Pakistan with a score of 61 off 104.
The right-hand batter looked well on course for a century but his innings came to an end courtesy of red-hot Robinson’s superb outside off delivery that crashed on to the stumps after hitting Abdullah Shafique’s back pad.
The visitors needed another rebuild after the flurry of wickets but the Pakistani batters could not contain the fiery spell of Josh Tongue, who took back-to-back three wickets of captain Salman Ali Agha (21), Muhammad Rizwan (12) and Ali Usman (golden duck).
Ollie Robinson completed his fifer with the wicket of Khurram Shahzad for 14 off 12 while Tongue wrapped up the first innings with a five-wicket haul of his own by getting Mohammad Abbas for twoAs a result, Pakistan were folded for 171 on day one itself.
In the second innings, England made the most of good batting conditions to score 409 in their first innings and take a commanding 238-run lead over PakistanJordan Cox led the way with 73 on his Test debut, while Joe Root made 66 after returning as captain.
Harry Brook was England’s top scorer with 91 from 93 ballsHe added 120 runs with Dan Lawrence, who made 51 on his return to the Test sideThe pair helped England recover after Pakistan’s bowlers had made early inroads.
Cox had earlier shared useful stands with England’s top order, while Root’s 66 added further stabilityEngland did not have a century-maker, but four batters passed 50 and kept the scoreboard moving.
Pakistan spinner Ali Usman was their best bowler, finishing with five wickets for 92 runsEngland were eventually bowled out for 409, but the total gave them a huge advantage after Pakistan had been dismissed for 171.
Pakistan’s second innings never got going as England’s bowlers finished the job to seal an innings-and-103-run win in the first Test at HeadingleyPakistan, who had been bowled out for 171 in the first innings, were already 238 runs behind after England made 409.
England made early inroads when Jofra Archer removed both Pakistan openers, leaving the visitors in trouble againPakistan reached 51 for two, but the innings soon fell apartThey lost four wickets for just 25 runs as England’s pace attack kept the pressure on.
Muhammad Rizwan offered some resistance with 41 from 39 balls, but there was little support from the other endOllie Robinson and Josh Tongue continued their impressive performances from the first innings, while Archer and Gus Atkinson also chipped in with important wicketsPakistan were eventually bowled out for 135 in only 37.3 overs.
Robinson and Tongue finished with eight wickets each in the match with the former receiving the player of the match award for figures of 5/51 and 3/29Here are some of the best reactions on X.
