The BJP on Saturday criticised the Congress over its decision to sing only the first two stanzas of “Vande Mataram” at party events, saying there should be no compromise on the national song for political reasonsThe BJP said it will begin a nationwide campaign to highlight the history, meaning and significance of “Vande Mataram” and take its legacy to people across the country.

The resolution was passed at a meeting of the BJP’s newly appointed office-bearers in DelhiParty president Nitin Nabin chaired the meeting and later shared details of the resolution on XNabin said the party passed the resolution on August 22 to underline the importance of respecting “Vande Mataram” and preserving its historical legacy.

The BJP strongly opposed the Congress Working Committee’s August 19 decision to continue with its 1937 resolution, under which only the first two stanzas of the song are sung at Congress programmes.

The BJP said it would oppose any attempt to alter or limit the song because of “communal pressure”, political considerations or vote-bank politics.

“No compromise on the honour and legacy of Vande Mataram will be accepted for political convenience or appeasement,” Nabin said.

As part of its campaign, the BJP plans to explain the history and national importance of the song, particularly to young peopleThe party said the complete version, which has six stanzas, and its connection with India’s freedom struggle should not be forgotten.

The BJP also said it would highlight Mahatma Gandhi’s views on “Vande Mataram”, including his description of the song as an “anti-imperialist slogan” linked to strong nationalist sentiment.

Nabin said the party would work to preserve what he described as the “honour, dignity, heritage and national character” of the complete version of “Vande Mataram”.

The BJP said the awareness drive would focus especially on the younger generation so they can learn about the song’s history and understand its place in India’s independence movement.
