Heavy rain lashed several parts of north India on Monday, causing waterlogging, traffic jams and flight disruptionsDelhi-NCR was among the worst-hit regions, with several areas receiving heavy showers. Delhi saw waterlogging on several important roadsParts of Lutyens’ Delhi, Mathura Road, Connaught Place, Bhairon Marg, ITO and the Zakhira underpass were among the affected areasThe heavy showers brought traffic to a standstill at many places, with long queues of vehicles seen on flooded roadsStrong winds accompanied the rain in several parts of the capital.
Some parts of Delhi received close to 67 mm of rain, turning several roads into flooded stretches and making commuting difficult for residents.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Ayanagar recorded around 69.7 mm of rain in the past 24 hours, while Palam received 68.8 mmOther parts of Delhi also saw significant rainfallThe showers led to waterlogging and affected traffic and flight operations in several areas.
Gurugram faced major traffic problems as roads were flooded across the cityIn some places, parents were seen carrying their children through knee- to waist-deep water to reach school buses and other vehiclesMany cars and other vehicles were left stranded on flooded roads.
Several parts of Gurugram, including Narsinghpur, Hero Honda Chowk, Rajiv Chowk, IFFCO Chowk and areas of old Gurugram, were badly affectedWater also accumulated around Rajiv Chowk, while school buses and ambulances struggled to move through flooded stretches of Sohna Road.
Major dip in temperature
The rain also brought down the temperature in the cityDelhi recorded a minimum temperature of 27.8°C on Monday, around 1.4 degrees above normalThe maximum temperature was about 32.3°C, which was 1.8 degrees below the normal level.
In neighbouring areas, Ghaziabad recorded a maximum temperature of 30.9°C, while Noida touched 32.7°C.
Rain likely in Delhi, Noida today
The IMD has forecast partly cloudy to cloudy skies over Delhi on Tuesday, August 25Light rain is likely in some areas, with the possibility of thunderstorms in parts of the cityThe minimum temperature is expected to remain between 25 degrees celsius and 27 degrees celsius, while the maximum may stay around 33 degrees celsius to 35 degrees celsius.
Rain may occur at different times during the day, but the IMD has not issued any weather warning for Delhi on Tuesday.
Noida is also expected to experience cloudy weather with rain and thunderstorm activity on Tuesday.
